A mining excavator is judged by one thing on site: how many tons it moves per shift, at what fuel cost, with how few stoppages. Everything else is secondary. When buyers search for a mining excavator for sale, they are usually weighing a 30-ton machine against a 45-ton machine, and trying to work out whether a used unit with 2,000 hours is a smarter buy than a new one at three times the price.
Below is a practical walk through the numbers, the wear points, and the price bands, based on what actually gets shipped out of Shanghai to mines and quarries every month.
What counts as a mining excavator
There is no official badge. In practice, machines from 30 tons upward do the bulk of pit and quarry work. They handle overburden stripping, bench loading, blasted rock handling, and feeding crushers or haul trucks.
What separates a mine-spec unit from a standard construction machine is build detail: heavier boom and stick plating, a reinforced undercarriage with full track guards, larger swing bearings, and higher auxiliary hydraulic flow so a rock breaker or shear can run at full output.
Smaller machines still earn a living underground and in small-scale gold or aggregate pits. A 20 to 22-ton class unit fits tunnel headings and narrow benches where a 45-ton machine cannot swing. Buyers searching for an underground mining excavator almost always end up in the 13 to 22-ton range for this reason.
Weight classes that suit pit and quarry work
30 to 36 tons. The workhorse group. CAT 330D and 336D, Komatsu PC350-8 and PC360, Hitachi ZX350, Doosan DH370LC-9. Bucket capacity sits around 1.5 to 1.9 m³. One of these fills a 20 to 30-ton articulated truck in five to seven passes. Transport height stays near 3.2 m, so a standard lowboy still works.
40 to 50 tons. Higher output per pass, fewer machines needed for the same tonnage. Used CAT349E at 49 T with a 2.4 m³ bucket and 410 HP, Used Komatsu PC450-7 at 45 T with 330 HP, Hitachi ZX470 at 47 T, Hyundai 485LVS, Sany SY485H. Dig depth runs 7.1 to 7.8 m, which covers most single-bench cuts.
60 tons and above. For continuous truck loading at volume. The Used Hitachi ZX650 carries a 2.93 m³ bucket behind a 488 HP engine and pairs well with 40 to 60-ton rigid haulers. Machines this size often ship with the counterweight and boom removed to stay inside road width and axle limits.

Output per hour and how to estimate it
Buyers often ask about excavator productivity per hour in m³. A rough field method works well enough for planning.
Take bucket capacity, multiply by fill factor, then by cycles per hour. A 2.0 m³ bucket at 0.85 fill factor moves 1.7 m³ per pass. At 120 cycles per hour, that is roughly 204 m³ of loose material. Blasted rock drops the fill factor to 0.7 or lower. Wet clay slows the cycle instead.
Truck matching decides the rest. If the excavator waits on trucks, a bigger bucket changes nothing. Match pass count to truck body volume first, then pick the machine.
Engine power and hydraulic flow
Net power tells you how much the machine can push through the pump under sustained load. A 33-ton CAT with a C7.1 at 275 HP and a 43-ton unit with a C7.1 at 145 HP are not the same machine, even with similar engine families. Check the plated net power, not the block casting.
For hammer work, ask for measured auxiliary flow in L/min and the relief setting. Rock breakers on hard granite need high flow circuits and a dedicated return line with its own filter. A machine that ran only bucket work for its whole life will need that circuit checked before a hammer goes on.
Bucket choice and ground engaging tools
Standard buckets crack in rock. A mine-duty bucket has thicker side plates, a full wear package on the base, and either bolt-on or weld-on shrouds. Tooth systems matter for fuel burn. Worn teeth force the operator to crowd harder, which raises cycle time and hydraulic heat.
When quoting a machine, ask what is on it now. Many used units come with a general purpose bucket. Fitting a rock bucket and new tooth set costs far less than replacing a boom that got bent trying to pry rock with the wrong tool.
Hours, year, and what wear actually tells you
Hours alone do not rank a machine. A 2019 unit with 3,158 hours that ran steady bench loading in dry ground often beats a 2021 unit with 1,100 hours that spent its life on a hammer in a demolition yard.
Look at the wear pattern instead:
- Track link and bushing wear, plus idler and sprocket profile
- Pin and bushing play at boom foot, stick, and bucket linkage
- Swing bearing play, measured with the boom extended
- Cylinder rod condition, especially scoring near the gland
- Undercarriage frame welds and track guard mounts
- Cold start behaviour and blow-by at the breather
Most used mining machines on offer sit between 1,000 and 3,200 hours with production years from 2018 to 2024. That band gives good remaining life without new-machine pricing.
Price ranges on the used market
Real figures from recent stock give a workable picture.
A 33-ton CAT 330D2 from 2018 with 3,158 hours prices near $95,000. A 47-ton Hitachi ZX470 from 2019 with 2,700 hours runs about $100,000. Komatsu PC450-7 at 45 tons is roughly $68,000.

Inspection steps before payment
Ask for a video walk-around with the engine running, not still photos. Request the hour meter on camera, a cold start clip, and a full swing test in both directions.
Then ask for these three things:
- Hydraulic oil sample results, or at minimum a clear photo of the oil at the sight glass
- Track measurement readings against the maker’s wear limits
- A close look at the boom weld seams and the counterweight mount
Any seller who cannot supply these is guessing about the machine’s condition.
Transport and delivery planning
Weight and width drive the cost. A 36-ton machine at 11.1 x 3.2 x 3.3 m fits standard heavy haul. Once you pass 45 tons, expect to strip the counterweight and sometimes the boom, then reassemble on site. Confirm who supplies the lifting gear and whether the pit access road handles the axle loads before the container books.
Sea freight for a 40-ton class machine usually moves on a flat rack or as breakbulk. Ask for the exact shipping weight and cube early, since that number changes the landed cost more than a small difference in machine price.
Parts supply after the machine lands
A cheap machine with no parts route is expensive. Before buying, check that the model has common filters, final drives, and pump availability in your region. Japanese-built CAT, Komatsu, and Hitachi models in the 20 to 50-ton range have the widest aftermarket support worldwide, which is one reason they hold resale value in South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
