Age alone doesn’t give the full picture. A 2019 machine with 800 hours has seen far less wear than a 2020 machine with 3,500 hours of heavy site work. Most industry benchmarks suggest a well-maintained excavator can reach 8,000 to 10,000 hours before major overhauls are needed.
Machines in the 1,200 to 2,500 hour range often represent strong value. They’ve been broken in and sorted, but still have plenty of productive life ahead.
Always ask for a maintenance history when possible. Regular oil changes, hydraulic fluid checks, and filter replacements are signs the previous owner took care of the machine. Machines with no documentation carry more risk.
